Seeing as it's Womens Suffrage Day in NZ I'm going to tell you about a conversation I had with my sister about slut shaming, feminism and why I do burlesque performance. We were discussing boobs on the internet, how it seems like A Thing for teenage girls to be encouraged by their peers to sext their boyfriends, but then be shamed by their peers for having pictures of their boobs on the internet (often posted without their consent). My sister, while being as much outraged by slut shaming as I am, I assume has been wondering why as a feminist and a skilled professional worker I would be ok with and even enjoy making my body publicly visible. My response (not the most eloquent, but fuck it, it's accurate) was this: "yep. and that is why I like to get my boobs out - SEE MY BOOBS? YES YOU DO! THEY ARE AWESOME AND ENJOYING THEM IS NOT SHAMEFUL. WHAT, DO YOU NOT LIKE IT? DO YOU THINK THIS IS SLUTTY? FUCK YOUR FACE! **cue gleeful tassel twirl*** That right there is why I do burlesque." Burlesque, while being fun, entertaining and playful, does open up dialogue around these issues that affect us all. Having lady parts and enjoying them does not make anyone a lesser person or any less competent in any sphere of their lives. Being a woman is not shameful. Men are not expected to sublimate their sexuality to gain respect in other areas of their life, so neither should you. Get your boobs out if you wanna. Here is Iggy Pop in a dress. I'm unbelievably honoured to announce that my Teenwolf routine is a finalist in the Favourite Routine category in the Golden Garters. The Golden Garters are the industry nominated awards for New Zealand Burlesque Community, so I'm incredibly grateful to be nominated by my peers for this routine, which, lets face it, is a pretty weird lil act. To make it to the top 3 is such an honour. Teenwolf says awwwwooooo, and thank you from the bottom of her hairy little heart. http://www.nzburlesquefestival.co.nz/golden-garters-2/ http://www.nzburlesquefestival.co.nz/the-golden-garter-awards/ It is my great honour to be performing as part of Dixie Evans Week at the Auckland event, at 1885 Britomart, on Saturday 31 August. I'm rather excited, it's the first show I'm headlining for! Will have to bring some extra POW especially! Friday 26 July Dr Sketchy Glamilton Altitude Bar, 30 Alexandra Street, Hamilton 7pm, $10 BYO art supplies I had the best time in Melbourne at the Australian Burlesque Festival, taking part in the Baby Bombshells show and being a whoopin' and hollerin' audience member at Nouvelle Royale & The Big Tease. So incredibly inspiring, I can't wait for next year! I had an amazing night getting my grrrrr on as Teenwolf at Baby Bombshells, I got to share a stage with a whole bunch of wonderful Aussie ladies and even ended up being one of the runners up. Amazed and awed by the talent of these performers and can't wait to see them perform again, hopefully sometime soon. p.s. This was my favourite judge's comment from Baby Bombshells on my Teenwolf act: "Loved it; very funny, a bit weird but that's what you wanted, right?" - Cassandra Jane hehe xA The countdown is on!!! I've been lucky enough to be accepted into the Baby Bombshells (Newcomers) show in the Australian Burlesque Festival. So in June I'll be packing up my costume for my favourite act and will be winging my way to Melbourne. I am already so freakin' excited!!! So for the next month, in between shows, I'll be honing my routine and glueing rhinestones to everything I can. I can't wait to check out the Melbourne scene and see some amazing international performers, I've already got my tickets to The Big Tease and Nouvelle Royale! There's a small posse of NZ performers crossing the ditch to perform, looking forward to see them all shine in Australia. Melbourne friends, see you all soon! xA It was a spectacular night at Miss Burlesque 2013 in the town hall concert chamber, Auckland! All the performances were of such a high standard and it was a pleasure to perform alongside such a wonderful bunch of guys and gals. Congratulations to Mo-Cachino and MisRed who took out the titles! Some amazing and inspiring performances took place, and it was a treat to share a (huge by burlesque standards) stage with all of the gorgeous creatures who took part. Can I say what a delight it was to see the Boylesquers taking part as well? Ima gonna say it - it was awesome! As a bonus I was lucky enough to take out the Sponsor Choice award with my Teenwolf act. Awoooooooo! I am such a happy lil' wolfling. It's just over one week to Miss Burlesque New Zealand! I'm a contestant this year so this week I shall be in a whirlwind of practice and final costume tweaks. Come on down to the gorgeous Concert Chamber at Auckland Town Hall Saturday 13 April to have myself and a bevvy of other smoking hot performers entertain and delight you. There will be fantastic local and international performers as well as the competitors, and at the end of the night they'll be crowning Miss & Mr Burlesque New Zealand! I have a very exciting act prepared, I can't wait! See you there! x Ava |
